it’s a super-rare thing for me to feel that i am not qualified to comment on a work, but i’ve now written and tossed three versions of this review.
all i can say is: read it. even if you are lily-white. maybe especially if you are lily-white. if you believe what’s been said about black people in america. if you are white and you believe you know something about black people in america. if you think you understand the heritage of slavery; if you are certain in your convictions of liberality; if the phrase “black-on-black violence” doesn’t make you squirm. if you think nothing in this book will make you squirm. if you think that the murders of black people by police has no consequence in your universe. if you think you are sufficiently broad-minded enough that Coates has nothing new to tell you.
i assure you he does. read it.
