The Magician's AssistantThe Magician’s Assistant by Ann Patchett

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

rich los angeleno is suddenly widowed, finds out her gay dead husband (whom she knew was gay) was victim to horrible domestic violence as a child. in nebraska.

poor nebraska takes most of the hits in this tale, as if the entire state is full of nothing but uncultured people who never had a sophisticated thought or a plate of eggs benedict. as if. really, it gets quite tedious to be regaled with the superiority of los angeles. it’s almost as if it were a new york tale, which the rest of the country has got quite used to.

writing that so excoriates an entire state (see The Goldfinch) without really having the slightest familiarity with it is just bad. bad writing.

so, meh.
