the tale of a young Lemony Snicket!
after having read (and hugely enjoyed) The Series of Unfortunate Events, of course i could not resist diving on this new venture by Lemony Snicket, rumored to be the first in a four-volume series.
Mr. Snicket was an adult in the last series, with a lugubrious and mournful humor and an adolescent’s wildly funny sense of the absurd. unfortunately, in this book, he’s a 13-year-old with an adult’s sense of weariness.
there are a few really good lines here, and of course a labyrinthine plot in the offing. but this book has no sense of closure, which each of the books of his previous series had, while they somehow made you pant for the next. and sadly, that wicked humor is just… gone.
i will almost certainly read the series, but i will also be getting them from the library, and if the wait list is long, well, i can wait.
