i listened to the Audible version, not really the print version, but am too too lazy to page through 7 pages of potential editions and pick the correct one.
anyway! the Audible version is great. the reader does a fabulous job of distinguishing the voices, so much so that one day i felt compelled to call up all my friends and repeat “Barkis is willing!” in the reader’s voice, just because it was so much fun to say.
as to the book itself, Dickens really needs no encomiums from me. it’s a beautiful book on more levels than i can describe, and if you’re not a Dickens fan, and have not had your heart surgically removed, you should be. in English literature, while Shakespeare undoubtedly wins hands-down the award for beauty in language, Dickens must win for hugeness of heart (plus, he was no slouch in turning a phrase).
’nuff said. if you haven’t read or listened to Dickens, you have not lived.
